Croquet mallets and balls in Wellington

The short answer: Wellington players can order an Invictus mallet, made to their measurements, or a set of Invictus X championship balls, and we send them from Australia to the capital. For a breezy city whose lawns swing between soft and quick, the heavier Invictus Rise is the one we would suggest first.

Croquet in Wellington

Wellington has a real place on the world croquet map. In February 2018 it staged the Association Croquet World Championship, run from 3 to 11 February with the Kelburn club as the main venue and further lawns across the city in use; the qualifying event was played at Palmerston North. The final was decided at Kelburn, where the club has been based at Kelburn Park since 1913 and plays association croquet at both social and top level. Local reports put the championship across five Wellington venues, so the city's other club lawns had their turn in front of a world field too.

What Wellington's lawns and weather mean for your mallet

Everyone knows Wellington for its wind. A steady blow dries a lawn out fast in summer, so the grass can run quick and firm, while a wet, cool winter leaves the same surface soft and slow. Gusts also test your balance over the ball, and a heavier head tends to feel more settled through the swing. Rain is no worry for an aluminium head, which does not swell or split the way timber can.

Which Invictus mallet suits Wellington players

Invictus Rise. The model more of our players choose than any other. The aluminium head is about 3 lb, and a slightly larger sweet spot makes it a little easier to control when conditions are against you. We usually recommend it with an 11 inch head.

RF Pro. Our flagship, worked out with World Champion Robert Fletcher. A 3D printed aluminium body carries brass weights and composite faces, for a head of about 2 lb 12 oz: lighter, and very precise on a fast summer lawn.

Each mallet is built for its owner, to your handle length, with a choice of 11 or 12 inch head. Graphite Black comes as standard, and Snow White, NRA Blue, Rose Gold or Deep Purple are available at extra cost. Weight is set by the model rather than chosen. The fitting guide walks you through measuring.

Balls for Wellington clubs

Invictus X balls carry World Croquet Federation championship approval. They are 450 g and wholly made in Australia. For each lawn, a set in first colours and a set in second colours is a sensible guide; read what WCF approval means before your club decides.

Delivery to Wellington

Your mallet is made after you order and leaves from Australia; usually expect 4 to 8 weeks from order, which is an estimate and not a guarantee. On ball sets we confirm the delivered price to Wellington before you pay.

Questions Wellington players ask

Does the wind make a heavier mallet better? It often helps: the 3 lb Rise is harder to push off line in a gusty swing. If you prefer a light mallet and mostly play on fast summer lawns, the RF Pro is the alternative.

Is there a way to try it at my club first? Yes. A free 30-day satisfaction guarantee lets you use the mallet in club games before you decide to keep it.

Where can I see prices? On each product page linked above. To see the two mallets set against each other, use compare mallets.
