Croquet mallets and balls in Queenstown and Wanaka

The short answer: croquet players in Queenstown and Wanaka can order an Invictus mallet, built to their own handle length, or Invictus X championship balls, and we deliver them from Australia. Lakes District summers can make lawns firm and fast, so the precise RF Pro deserves a look, though the Invictus Rise is the easier all-rounder.

Croquet in Queenstown and Wanaka

The Queenstown Lakes district has two clubs. Wakatipu Croquet Club plays at Jardine Park in Kelvin Heights, Queenstown, on Thursdays and Saturdays from September to April, with both association and golf croquet; its listing notes that start times move earlier, to 9.30am, when the weather is hot.

Wanaka Croquet Club is at 211 Warren Street. From mid-September to April it plays golf croquet on Wednesday mornings, and golf and association croquet on Thursday and Saturday afternoons, and its listing says visitors are always welcome. Both clubs belong to Croquet New Zealand, which the Wanaka listing describes as 19 regional associations, 112 clubs and more than 4,200 members.

What the Lakes District's lawns and weather mean for your mallet

Inland Otago has a more continental climate than the coast: hot, dry summer days, cold winters with hard frosts, and a big swing in temperature between morning and afternoon. A lawn that is dewy and soft at 9.30 can be firm and quick by mid-afternoon. The Wakatipu club has described lawn upkeep, with mowing twice a week, as one of its biggest costs. Heat, frost and dew make no difference to an aluminium head.

Which Invictus mallet suits Queenstown and Wanaka players

The RF Pro is our flagship, shaped with the help of World Champion Robert Fletcher. Its head is 3D printed in aluminium, carries brass weights and composite faces, and weighs in at about 2 lb 12 oz, so it is lighter and very precise, which pays off on a fast summer lawn.

The Invictus Rise is our most popular mallet. With around 3 lb of aluminium in the head and a slightly larger sweet spot, it is a little easier to control, and it copes better when a morning lawn is still soft. We usually recommend an 11 inch head with it.

Both are made to order: your handle length, an 11 or 12 inch head, and Graphite Black as standard, with Snow White, NRA Blue, Rose Gold or Deep Purple available for an extra charge. Weight cannot be chosen. Start with the fitting guide, then compare mallets.

Balls for Lakes District clubs

Invictus X is championship approved by the World Croquet Federation, weighs 450 g and is made entirely in Australia. Clubs usually allow a first-colour set and a second-colour set per lawn; read what WCF approval means for the standard.
