Croquet mallets and balls in Shrewsbury

The short answer: Shropshire players can order an Invictus mallet built to their handle length, or Invictus X balls, online with delivery to Shrewsbury and the county. For a club devoted to association croquet on carefully levelled lawns, we usually begin with the Invictus Rise.

Croquet in Shrewsbury

Shrewsbury Croquet Club was founded in 1983 with 13 members, playing on an old double tennis court at Monkmoor that the borough council let it use, with starter equipment bought with Sports Council help. In 1987 a new inner ring road cut through that corner of the recreation ground, and the council built two new croquet lawns on adjacent school playing fields. After 24 seasons those lawns were relaid in 2012 using laser levelling and a turf chosen after advice from Wimbledon and the Croquet Association. Today the club, at Monkmoor Recreation Ground on Racecourse Crescent, plays only association croquet on its two full-size lawns from early April to the end of September. It contests the A49 Trophy against Church Stretton and plays West Midlands Federation matches against clubs such as Eardisley. Introductory courses, open days and coaching are offered.

What Shrewsbury's lawns and weather mean for your mallet

Shrewsbury sits in a loop of the Severn, inland and sheltered, with mild but often damp weather off the Welsh hills. Laser-levelled lawns run true, though in spring and September they are often slow and soft. In association croquet, where a break can depend on a long roll or a gentle stop shot, consistent contact matters more than raw power.

Which Invictus mallet suits Shrewsbury players

Invictus Rise, £525. Our most popular choice. A head of about 3 lb in aluminium and a slightly larger sweet spot make it a little easier to control through a break. We usually suggest it with an 11 inch head.

RF Pro, £975. Flagship model, refined in partnership with World Champion Robert Fletcher. Brass weights in a 3D printed aluminium head, faced with composite, bring it to near 2 lb 12 oz; lighter and very precise for players chasing fine control.

Whichever you pick is built after you order, to your handle length, with an 11 or 12 inch head. Graphite Black comes as standard; Deep Purple, Snow White, Rose Gold or NRA Blue costs an extra £89. Head weight is fixed. Read our fitting guide and compare mallets.

Balls for Shrewsbury clubs

Invictus X, £479 a set, has World Croquet Federation approval for championship play, weighs 450 g a ball and is made entirely in Australia. Two lawns need, as a guide, two sets in first colours and two in second. More in what WCF approval means.

Delivery to Shrewsbury

We begin your mallet when the order comes in and send it to the UK; usually allow 4 to 8 weeks from ordering, which is an estimate. Ball sets have their delivered price confirmed with you before payment.

Questions Shrewsbury players ask

We only play AC. Does that change the choice? Not much. The Rise is the forgiving all-rounder; the RF Pro rewards players who want a lighter, very precise feel.

Can I try it in club competitions first? Yes: the 30-day satisfaction guarantee is an optional £75.

Will a soft spring lawn harm the head? No. Dry the faces after play; see product care.
