Croquet in Milton Keynes
Croquet in Milton Keynes means Stony Stratford Croquet Club, which describes itself as the only croquet club in the city. It plays at the Ancell Trust Sports Grounds on Ostlers Lane, Stony Stratford, offers play at every level and welcomes complete beginners. Companies House shows a company under the club's name incorporated in April 2024, registered at the ground.
The ground has a story of its own. Frederick Ancell, a Stony Stratford builder who died in 1919, left over £18,000 for the benefit of the townspeople, and the trust formed from his will bought the land in 1921. Its layout included a croquet ground from the start, alongside cricket, football, bowls and tennis, and the Ancell Trust is still the registered charity that owns the site today. Session times are available from the club secretary.
What Milton Keynes's lawns and weather mean for your mallet
Stony Stratford sits in the Ouse valley, and Milton Keynes has a fairly dry, inland English climate compared with the coast. Without sea air to keep the grass damp, a warm summer can leave a lawn firm and quick, while spring and autumn bring dew and slower, heavier play.
Which Invictus mallet suits Milton Keynes players
Invictus Rise, £525. Our most popular mallet. Around 3 lb, with an aluminium head and a slightly bigger sweet spot, it is a little easier to control. We usually recommend the 11 inch head.
RF Pro, £975. The flagship, which we developed together with World Champion Robert Fletcher. Composite faces and brass weights are set into a 3D printed aluminium head, and at about 2 lb 12 oz it is lighter, with very precise feel on a firm summer lawn.
Both are made to order to your handle length, and either takes an 11 or 12 inch head. Graphite Black is the standard colour; Snow White, NRA Blue, Rose Gold and Deep Purple are £89 extra. Head weight is fixed. Our mallet comparison and fitting advice will help you decide.
