Croquet mallets and balls in Glasgow
The short answer: Glasgow croquet players can buy an Invictus mallet made to their own measurements, or Invictus X balls for club use, online with delivery to the city. With the west of Scotland's wet weather in mind, the Invictus Rise is the mallet we would put in most Glasgow hands first.
Croquet in Glasgow
Glasgow Croquet Club plays on the bowling green at Knightswood Park and welcomes everyone from complete beginners to first-class players. It plays both association croquet and golf croquet, with regular sessions on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons and plans for Saturday play. Its golf croquet afternoons have run from April to October, and the club says it provides all the equipment a newcomer needs. Its fixture list has included the West of Scotland Championship and the Spalding Trophy. Down the coast, Auchincruive Croquet Club plays on the Auchincruive Estate, about three miles from Ayr.
What Glasgow's lawns and weather mean for your mallet
Glasgow is one of the wetter cities in Britain, with Atlantic weather sweeping in from the west through spring and autumn. Lawns there seldom stay dry for long, so much of the season is played on slow, soft grass, with only short dry spells to speed it up. Weight in the head does a lot of the work on such a surface, and a forgiving face helps when cold hands make a stroke less smooth.
Which Invictus mallet suits Glasgow players
Invictus Rise, £525. The mallet we sell more of than any other. The aluminium head is about 3 lb, and a sweet spot a little larger than usual makes it slightly easier to control. Our standard advice is the 11 inch head.
RF Pro, £975. The top model, and a joint effort with World Champion Robert Fletcher. Its aluminium head is produced by 3D printing, then given composite faces and brass weights. It weighs about 2 lb 12 oz: lighter, and very precise.
Whichever you choose, we make it once you order, cut to the handle length you give us, and you pick a head of 11 or 12 inches. Graphite Black costs nothing more, while Deep Purple, Snow White, Rose Gold or NRA Blue is an £89 extra. Weight cannot be specified. The fitting guide and compare mallets help you decide.
Balls for Glasgow clubs
Invictus X is approved by the World Croquet Federation for championship play. The balls weigh 450 g each, they are made entirely in Australia, and a set costs £479. Two sets per lawn, first colours plus second colours, is the usual guide. Read our page on what WCF approval means.
Delivery to Glasgow
Your mallet goes into production when you order and, as an estimate, usually arrives in Glasgow 4 to 8 weeks later. Buying balls? We tell you the full delivered price first, and you pay only once you have agreed it.
Questions Glasgow players ask
Golf croquet only: which mallet? The Rise; its heavier head helps clearances on slow Knightswood grass.
Can I play it for a few weeks first? Yes. For £75 you can add our satisfaction guarantee, an optional extra that gives you 30 days.
Will west-coast rain damage it? No. Aluminium does not swell or rot; dry it after a wet session and see product care.
