Croquet mallets and balls in Ayr
The short answer: players in Ayr and across Ayrshire can order an Invictus mallet or Invictus X balls online for delivery to the door. For lawns in a river gorge on Scotland's wet west coast, the Invictus Rise is the mallet we would start with.
Croquet in Ayr
Auchincruive Croquet Club plays on the Auchincruive Estate, about three miles from Ayr, in the gorge of the River Ayr and overlooked by Oswald Hall, an Adam mansion. It grew from a lunchtime golf croquet club started in the 1960s by staff of the West of Scotland Agricultural College; in the 1970s, having found the wider Scottish croquet scene, members took up association croquet, and the club now has some sixty years of play behind it, including several All-England finalists. Club sessions run on Thursday evenings from 4pm and Saturday afternoons from 2pm, from mid-April to the end of October, and members can book the lawns at other times outside club events. The 2026 calendar included a D-level tournament for handicaps of 10 and above, a separate "Class of 2026" D-level event for members who had joined in the previous two years, the Scottish Croquet Association golf croquet interclub and club doubles and singles. Membership is open to anyone from 9 to 99, and the club will help new players get a handicap.
What Ayr's lawns and weather mean for your mallet
Ayrshire faces the Firth of Clyde and takes the full run of Atlantic weather: mild, but frequently wet. Lawns down in a gorge stay green and soft, and morning dew lingers. Weight in the head moves the ball on that grass without a longer swing, and forgiveness helps newer players.
Which Invictus mallet suits Ayr players
Invictus Rise, £525. Our best seller. Around 3 lb of aluminium forms the head, and a fractionally roomier sweet spot makes the Rise a little easier to control. Fit the 11 inch head, as we normally suggest.
RF Pro, £975. Our flagship, designed with World Champion Robert Fletcher. At close to 2 lb 12 oz it is the lighter, very precise option, its 3D printed aluminium head carrying brass weights behind composite faces.
Nothing is pre-made. Send your handle length, say whether the head should be 11 or 12 inches, and pick standard Graphite Black or, for £89, Rose Gold, NRA Blue, Snow White or Deep Purple. Weight is set by the model. See the fitting guide and compare mallets.
Balls for Ayr clubs
For championship play the World Croquet Federation has approved Invictus X, a 450 g ball made entirely in Australia and sold at £479 per set. The guide is a first-colour and a second-colour set for every lawn. Read what WCF approval means.
Delivery to Ayr
Mallets are built for you once ordered, then sent to the UK; Ayr is usually reached 4 to 8 weeks from the order date, an estimate. You approve the delivered price of any ball set before money changes hands.
