Croquet mallets and balls in Taunton
The short answer: Taunton players can order an Invictus mallet or Invictus X balls online and have them delivered across Taunton Deane. For a club playing Association, Golf and Short Croquet in changeable Somerset weather, the forgiving Invictus Rise is our usual first pick.
Croquet in Taunton
Taunton Deane Croquet Club began in 1985 on a single sloping lawn and moved in 2005 to the Taunton Vale Sports Club ground at Staplegrove, off Greenway Road, where it now has three full lawns and its own clubhouse. Members range from national and county players to beginners, and all are social members of the sports club. In 2026 the club entered ten teams in South West Federation leagues, and by October it had won two leagues and a Short Croquet division. Short Croquet, played on half lawns in 75-minute games, has caught on here: Taunton teams have played the Short Croquet tournaments at Nailsea and Budleigh Salterton since 2015, and in July 2026 the club hosted a one-day teams event for six clubs from across the south west. New members get regular lessons and arranged games, and the club opened its lawns to visitors on 16 and 17 May 2026.
What Taunton's lawns and weather mean for your mallet
Taunton sits in the vale between the Quantock and Blackdown Hills, and the club itself advises bringing rainwear as well as a sunhat. The main season runs from early April to late September, with winter play only when weather and lawn condition allow. Spring and autumn grass is often damp and slow; high summer firms it up.
Which Invictus mallet suits Taunton players
Invictus Rise, £525. Our most popular mallet. The roughly 3 lb aluminium head pushes the ball through damp spring turf, and a slightly larger sweet spot makes it a little easier to control, a help for newer members. We usually suggest an 11 inch head.
RF Pro, £975. Our flagship, developed with World Champion Robert Fletcher. It pairs a 3D printed aluminium head with brass weights and composite faces, about 2 lb 12 oz overall; lighter and very precise, ideal for the delicate work of Short Croquet peels.
Each is made to order to your handle length, and you choose an 11 or 12 inch head. Graphite Black is the standard colour; Snow White, NRA Blue, Deep Purple or Rose Gold are £89 extra. See the fitting guide and compare mallets.
Balls for Taunton clubs
Invictus X balls are World Croquet Federation championship approved, weigh 450 g and are made entirely in Australia; a set is £479. A three-lawn club would normally keep a first-colour and a second-colour set for each lawn. Read how to choose croquet balls for a club.
