Croquet mallets and balls in Sidmouth

The short answer: Sidmouth players can buy an Invictus mallet or a set of Invictus X balls online and have it delivered to the Sid valley. For members who play the Fortfield lawns through every season, the 3 lb Invictus Rise is the mallet we would put forward first.

Croquet in Sidmouth

Croquet took hold in Sidmouth around 1900, and the town held its first open tournament in 1908. Sidmouth Croquet Club plays at The Fortfield, a short walk from the seafront, on four full-sized lawns, and shares a thatched clubhouse, with bar and restaurant, with the cricket and tennis members. Its records of Association Croquet winners run back to 1929. The calendar is a busy one: the Sidmouth Golf Croquet Championship, part of the Premier Series, opens the season each April, followed by a June mid-summer AC tournament and, in 2026, the GC Third Eight in August. Roll-ups run from late April to the end of September.

What Sidmouth's lawns and weather mean for your mallet

Sheltered by its red cliffs, Sidmouth enjoys one of the gentler climates in England, and the club plays year-round when the weather allows, usually keeping two lawns open in winter. Winter grass is soft and slow, often wet from Channel rain; by a dry June the same lawns are firm and quick for visiting tournament players. A mallet here works across a wide range of pace.

Which Invictus mallet suits Sidmouth players

Invictus Rise, £525. Our most popular model. The head is aluminium and weighs about 3 lb, enough to drive a ball through a damp December lawn without forcing the stroke, and its sweet spot is a little larger, which makes it slightly easier to control. Most buyers take the 11 inch head.

RF Pro, £975. The top of our range, developed alongside World Champion Robert Fletcher. Brass weights and composite faces sit in a head printed in aluminium; at around 2 lb 12 oz it is the lighter, very precise choice for summer competition.

We make each mallet to order for your own handle length, with the head in 11 or 12 inches. The standard finish is Graphite Black, and NRA Blue, Rose Gold, Snow White or Deep Purple cost an extra £89. Head weight is set by the model you pick. Read the fitting guide, then compare the two mallets.

Balls for Sidmouth clubs

The Invictus X ball carries World Croquet Federation approval for championship play, weighs 450 g and is made entirely in Australia; a set is £479. As a starting point, budget one set of first colours and one set of second colours for every lawn. Our guide to croquet ball colours explains the difference.

Delivery to Sidmouth

Because every mallet is built after you order, expect it in Sidmouth usually 4 to 8 weeks later; please treat that as an estimate. When you order balls, we confirm the delivered cost before taking payment.

Questions Sidmouth players ask

Which suits a golf croquet player? Either works. Many GC players like the Rise's forgiveness on slower lawns, while those chasing fine control on fast summer courts lean towards the RF Pro.

What if it does not suit me? Choose the optional 30-day satisfaction guarantee (£75) and you can play with it at the Fortfield before you decide.

How should I look after it after a wet game? Dry the faces and the head before storing it; our product care page covers the rest.
