Croquet mallets and balls in Plymouth
The short answer: Plymouth players can order an Invictus mallet or Invictus X balls on our website and have them delivered anywhere in the city. For members at Hartley Park, who play from April to October and often right through the winter, the 3 lb Invictus Rise is the mallet we usually point to first.
Croquet in Plymouth
Plymouth Croquet Club plays in Hartley Park, off Mannamead Road, on an unusual ground: the roof of a Victorian reservoir. Hartley Reservoir was built between 1859 and 1862; it was drained from 1981 and capped by March 1982 with a concrete roof on 165 pillars, then grassed over for outdoor leisure. On top sit the club's four full-size courts, each 35 by 28 yards, with half courts marked on some for learners. Members play Golf, Association, Ricochet and Short Croquet. Club afternoons start at 1.45pm on Wednesdays and Saturdays, coaching and club mallets are free for members, and Plymouth teams travel all over the south west for league matches. Members can hold a clubhouse key and play any day in daylight.
What Plymouth's lawns and weather mean for your mallet
Plymouth's weather comes in off the Atlantic and the Sound: mild, rarely frozen, and often wet. That is why play can carry on through the winter here, but it also means many games are on soft, slow grass. In a dry summer the reservoir lawns firm up and quicken, so a Plymouth mallet has to cover both conditions.
Which Invictus mallet suits Plymouth players
Invictus Rise, £525. Our most popular mallet. With an aluminium head of about 3 lb, it keeps the ball travelling on damp winter courts, and its slightly larger sweet spot makes it a little easier to control for newer members. We usually recommend pairing it with an 11 inch head.
RF Pro, £975. The flagship of our range, developed with World Champion Robert Fletcher. Its aluminium head is produced by 3D printing and carries brass weights and composite faces, for roughly 2 lb 12 oz in all. Lighter and very precise, it rewards an experienced, repeatable swing.
Your mallet is made to order at your handle length, with an 11 or 12 inch head as you prefer. Graphite Black is the standard finish; NRA Blue, Snow White, Rose Gold and Deep Purple cost £89 extra. Read the fitting guide and see the comparison of our mallets.
Balls for Plymouth clubs
Invictus X carries World Croquet Federation approval for championship play, weighs 450 g and is made entirely in Australia, priced at £479 per set. Four courts would usually call for eight sets, first and second colours on each. See how many ball sets a club needs.
Delivery to Plymouth
We start building your mallet when you order and send it to the UK; delivery to Plymouth is usually 4 to 8 weeks from the order date, as an estimate. Ball sets are confirmed at a delivered price before you pay.
Questions Plymouth players ask
I play Ricochet as well as Golf Croquet. Does that change the choice? Not much. The Rise's forgiveness helps in every format; the RF Pro suits players who want the finest control.
Can I use it in league matches before I decide? Yes, with the optional 30-day satisfaction guarantee, which costs £75.
What care does it need after a wet winter session? Dry the faces and head and keep it indoors; see product care.
