Croquet mallets and balls in Orbost

The short answer: Orbost players can order an Invictus mallet or Invictus X balls online and have them delivered to the Snowy River country. On the club's fast, well-kept green the lighter RF Pro is worth a look, while the Invictus Rise is our everyday recommendation.

Croquet in Orbost

Croquet has deep roots in Orbost: a museum record of an old wooden mallet, donated to the local historical collection, notes that the town's first croquet committee was formed in 1919. Today's Orbost Croquet Club formed in July 2008, with help from a Bairnsdale club stalwart who also helped start the Sarsfield and Lakes Entrance clubs. It plays every Friday from 9am on the grass bowling green in Sylvia Street, supplies equipment to visitors and asks only for flat-soled shoes. The club holds its own championships in singles, sectional and doubles play, and in 2025 it honoured a long-serving member with life membership. Its friendly rivalry with Lakes Entrance goes back to fun days begun in 2011; in March 2025 Orbost won the challenge shield 11.5 games to 6.5, on courts the visitors called fast and pristine.

What Orbost's lawns and weather mean for your mallet

Orbost lies on the Snowy River flats in far East Gippsland, between the mountains and the coast. The climate is mild: warm summers, cool winters and reasonable rain, and visiting players have found the green fast. Winter mornings slow it, and dew can linger until mid-morning.

Which Invictus mallet suits Orbost players

Invictus Rise, A$990. Our most popular mallet. The aluminium head is about 3 lb with a slightly enlarged sweet spot, which makes it a little easier to control, especially in doubles where every shot counts. We usually suggest the 11 inch head.

RF Pro, A$1,980. Our flagship, shaped by development with World Champion Robert Fletcher. Brass weights and composite faces are fitted to a 3D printed aluminium head, and the mallet weighs about 2 lb 12 oz. Lighter and very precise, it suits a fast green and players defending the challenge shield.

We make every mallet after the order arrives: handle to your length, head of 11 or 12 inches, and Graphite Black as standard, with Deep Purple, NRA Blue, Rose Gold or Snow White available for A$130.90 more. See our fitting guide and mallet comparison.

Balls for Orbost clubs

Invictus X balls weigh 450 g, are made entirely in Australia and are approved by the World Croquet Federation for championship play. A set is A$990. As a guide, allow a first-colour and a second-colour set for each court you mark out; our page on ball sets per club helps.

Delivery to Orbost

Allow about 4 to 8 weeks from order for your mallet to arrive in Orbost; it is an estimate. For balls, tell us how many courts you play and we will quote including delivery.

Questions Orbost players ask

We only play on Fridays. Is a mallet of my own worth it? If you play every week and want one fitted to you, yes.

Can I play the Lakes challenge with it first? If it falls within 30 days of delivery: the optional satisfaction guarantee is A$99.

Will dew hurt the head? No. Wipe it dry and see product care.
