Croquet mallets and balls in Newton Abbot
The short answer: players in Newton Abbot, Torquay and the rest of south Devon can order an Invictus mallet or Invictus X balls online and have them delivered locally. The town's club plays Golf Croquet only and expects new members to get their own mallet; for most of them, the forgiving Invictus Rise is the one we would suggest.
Croquet in Newton Abbot
Newton Abbot Croquet Club was formed in 2011 and plays in Forde Park, on ground that was once the park's grass tennis courts. It plays Golf Croquet only, the quicker, sociable form of the game in which every player takes single shots in turn and a game usually lasts about 45 minutes. The season normally runs from April to September, weather permitting. Members pay an annual fee plus a £1 daily green fee, taster sessions are available with all kit supplied, and the park pavilion serves light refreshments from 10am to 3pm. The club reports continuing growth in membership, and its own guidance is clear: new members will acquire their own mallets. For tournament play, the larger south-west venues at Budleigh Salterton and Sidmouth are within reach.
What Newton Abbot's lawns and weather mean for your mallet
South Devon is mild and often wet, and a single park lawn that was built for tennis can be soft and slow in April and again in September. In a dry summer the same grass firms up and quickens. In Golf Croquet every stroke is a single shot at a hoop or an opponent's ball, so steady, forgiving contact matters more than extra length.
Which Invictus mallet suits Newton Abbot players
Invictus Rise, £525. Our most popular mallet, and a natural choice for a first mallet of your own. It has an aluminium head of roughly 3 lb and a slightly larger sweet spot, so it is a little easier to control when running a hoop or clearing. We usually recommend the 11 inch head.
RF Pro, £975. Our flagship, developed with World Champion Robert Fletcher. Brass weights and composite faces are carried in a 3D printed aluminium head, for about 2 lb 12 oz; lighter and very precise, for players who want the finest touch.
Both are made to order to match your handle length, with an 11 inch or 12 inch head. Graphite Black is standard, or choose Snow White, NRA Blue, Rose Gold or Deep Purple for £89 more. The fitting guide and compare mallets page set out the choice.
Balls for Newton Abbot clubs
Invictus X balls are approved by the World Croquet Federation for championship play, weigh 450 g and are made entirely in Australia; one set is £479. For a single lawn the guide is one first-colour set and one second-colour set. Our ball colours guide explains why.
Delivery to Newton Abbot
Mallets are built after ordering and sent to the UK, usually reaching south Devon 4 to 8 weeks from your order, as an estimate. Ball sets are confirmed at a delivered price before you pay.
Questions Newton Abbot players ask
I have only had a taster session. Is it too soon to buy? Not if you plan to join; the Rise is forgiving enough to grow with you.
What if it does not suit my game? The optional 30-day satisfaction guarantee (£75) lets you play with it first.
Do I need a heavier mallet for Golf Croquet? Not necessarily; many GC players like the Rise's weight, others the lighter RF Pro.
