Croquet mallets and balls in Maryborough, Victoria

The short answer: croquet players in Maryborough, in Victoria's Central Goldfields, can order an Invictus mallet or Invictus X balls online for delivery to town. For golf croquet pennant on the Station Street lawns, we would start most players on the Rise and point the sharper competitors to the RF Pro.

Croquet in Maryborough

Maryborough VRI Croquet Club was established in 1935 and officially opened on 14 November 1936, beside the railway station at 32 Station Street. It began with one court and now has an A grade and a B grade court. In 2010 members decamped to nearby tennis courts while the lawns were rebuilt with underground watering; the new lawns opened in February 2011, and the equipment shed is named after the club's late eldest member. The club plays golf croquet on Wednesday and Saturday mornings. Its teams won the Northern District golf croquet pennant in 2016, and in 2022 its A grade side won the Goldfields association competition with the B grade side runner-up. Twice a year it plays Maldon for the Challenge Cup, it also meets Bendigo, and Ringwood visits each year. Probus members and Highview College students also visit.

What Maryborough's lawns and weather mean for your mallet

The goldfields around Maryborough have hot, dry summers and cold, often frosty winters. Even with watering, in high summer the courts still run fast and a gentle stroke goes a long way; the club starts half an hour later in June, July and August, months when cold mornings often leave the grass wet and slow.

Which Invictus mallet suits Maryborough players

Invictus Rise, A$990. The Rise is our most popular model. Roughly 3 lb of aluminium sits in the head, so the ball keeps rolling on a heavy winter lawn, and the slightly enlarged sweet spot makes it a little easier to control. Order it with an 11 inch head, our usual recommendation.

RF Pro, A$1,980. Created with World Champion Robert Fletcher, the RF Pro leads our range. Its head is 3D printed aluminium with brass weights and composite faces, and at about 2 lb 12 oz it is lighter and very precise, which pays off in tight pennant matches on fast summer courts.

We make each mallet only after it is ordered, with your handle length and an 11 or 12 inch head. Graphite Black is included; Deep Purple, Rose Gold, NRA Blue and Snow White cost A$130.90 more. The fitting notes and side-by-side comparison are worth reading first.

Balls for Maryborough clubs

Invictus X balls are made entirely in Australia, weigh 450 g and carry World Croquet Federation championship approval. They are A$990 a set, and the usual guide is a first-colour set and a second-colour set for each court. Our page on ball sets per club runs the numbers.

Questions Maryborough players ask

Is the RF Pro worth it for golf croquet alone? For precision-minded pennant players, yes; for social play the Rise is plenty.

Can I try it in a Challenge Cup match? Only if that falls inside 30 days: the optional satisfaction guarantee costs A$99.

Will frosty mornings affect the head? No. Dry it off after play and see product care.
