Croquet mallets and balls in Lilydale and the Yarra Valley

The short answer: golf croquet players in Lilydale and across the Yarra Ranges can have an Invictus mallet built to their own handle length and sent to their door, and a club can add championship approved balls one set at a time. We would point most players towards the Invictus Rise first.

Croquet in Lilydale

Lilydale Croquet Club formed in 1894, after the local tennis club asked the Shire Council for a strip of Lilydale Park, now Melba Park; it opened on 10 October that year. Croquet Victoria lists it as the state's second club, after Kyneton, and the oldest still on its original ground. A fire in 1990 took the building and much of the early paperwork.

Members marked 130 years on 19 October 2024. The Star Mail then counted 36 members sharing one court on Market Street, by the park entrance, and the shire directory says the club plays golf croquet only. It is the sole club in the Yarra Ranges, Ringwood being the next nearest, and it closed the 2024 season with two championship titles. The council has advertised come-and-try days there, with coaching included.

What Lilydale's lawns and weather mean for your mallet

Lilydale sits where the Yarra Valley meets the foothills, and it runs cooler and damper than inner Melbourne, particularly through winter. Dewy mornings slow the ball; a run of hot northerly days firms the surface right up. In golf croquet, where hoop running and clearances settle most games, a mallet that holds its line pays off on both.

Which Invictus mallet suits Lilydale players

Invictus Rise, A$990. Our most popular model. Three pounds or so of aluminium forms the head, and its somewhat bigger sweet spot forgives a strike that strays from centre. We usually suggest the 11 inch head.

RF Pro, A$1,980. Robert Fletcher, World Champion, helped develop this flagship. Brass weights sit inside a 3D printed aluminium head finished with composite faces; near 2 lb 12 oz, it is the lighter and more exact of the pair.

Work begins only when your order lands: handle cut to your measurement, head 11 or 12 inches long. Graphite Black costs nothing extra, while Snow White, NRA Blue, Rose Gold or Deep Purple add A$130.90. Nobody can pick the weight. Read our mallet fitting guide, then weigh up the Rise against the RF Pro.

Balls for Lilydale clubs

Invictus X balls hold World Croquet Federation championship approval, weigh 450 g each and are made entirely in Australia. Expect A$990 per set. Roughly, every court wants one first-colour set plus one second-colour set; our colours guide explains the pairings.

Delivery to Lilydale

Since nothing is built ahead, mallets generally reach the Yarra Valley 4 to 8 weeks after purchase. That is an estimate.

Questions Lilydale players ask

Is the RF Pro worth it for golf croquet only? It can be, for players chasing accuracy at the hoop; the Rise stays the easier all-rounder.

Can I try croquet before buying anything? Yes. Ask the club about its next come-and-try day.

What if the mallet does not suit me? Add the optional 30-day satisfaction guarantee, A$99, at checkout.
