Croquet mallets and balls in Hebden Bridge

The short answer: croquet players in Hebden Bridge and the upper Calder Valley can order an Invictus mallet made to their handle length and delivered to West Yorkshire, and the club can add championship approved balls one set at a time. On a soft Pennine lawn, we would recommend the Invictus Rise first.

Croquet in Hebden Bridge

The town's club is the Hebden Bridge (Blue Pig) Croquet Club, on Lee Mill Road off Keighley Road. It has a single lawn given over entirely to croquet and belongs to the Yorkshire Federation, and it welcomes newcomers as well as experienced players.

The ground is older than the club. According to a 2019 Hebden Bridge news item, it was laid out in 1898 as a recreation ground for the workers of nearby Lee Mill. The Midgehole WMA, the members' club known locally as the Blue Pig, bought the site, volunteers restored it, and it reopened as a croquet club affiliated to the Croquet Association. That notice gave Friday afternoon sessions from 2 to 5, with visitors welcome, and a season closing at the end of September. Check current times with the club before you go.

What Hebden Bridge's lawns and weather mean for your mallet

Hebden Bridge sits deep in a steep, wooded Pennine valley, and the Calder Valley is known for heavy rainfall. A lawn down by the river spends much of the season soft and green, and the valley sides cut afternoon sunshine short, so dew can linger. A heavier head that moves the ball without a long swing is an asset on slow, damp grass.

Which Invictus mallet suits Hebden Bridge players

Invictus Rise, £525. Our most popular mallet. Its aluminium head weighs about 3 lb, and the slightly larger sweet spot makes it a little easier to control. We normally suggest an 11 inch head.

RF Pro, £975. Our flagship, created alongside World Champion Robert Fletcher. Inside the 3D printed aluminium head are brass weights, with composite faces at each end; the mallet weighs about 2 lb 12 oz, lighter and very precise.

Both are built to your handle length after you order, with a choice of 11 or 12 inch heads. Graphite Black is standard, while Snow White, NRA Blue, Rose Gold and Deep Purple cost £89 more. Weights are fixed. Before ordering, read our handle length guide and how to look after a mallet.

Balls for Hebden Bridge clubs

Invictus X balls have World Croquet Federation championship approval. They weigh 450 g, are made entirely in Australia and cost £479 a set. A one-lawn club usually keeps one set of first colours and one of second; our guide to ball colours explains the difference.

Delivery to Hebden Bridge

Each mallet is made only once ordered, so delivery to Hebden Bridge is usually 4 to 8 weeks away. That timing is an estimate.
