Croquet mallets and balls in Exeter

The short answer: Exeter players can order an Invictus mallet or Invictus X balls online and have them brought to their door in the city. On the compact lawns at Pinces Gardens, where touch matters more than power, many players will be happy with either model; the Invictus Rise is our usual first suggestion.

Croquet in Exeter

Exeter Croquet Club plays at Pinces Gardens in St Thomas, on the west bank of the Exe. Its two lawns are roughly three-quarters of standard full size and are maintained to a very high standard by Exeter City Council. The club belongs to Croquet England and to the South West Federation, a region of around forty clubs, and plays both Association and Golf Croquet. People thinking of joining are welcome to try the game first, and the city sits within easy reach of the larger coastal venues of East Devon for anyone who wants tournament play.

What Exeter's lawns and weather mean for your mallet

Devon weather is mild and often wet, so the grass at Pinces Gardens can stay soft for long stretches of spring and autumn, then dry out and quicken in a warm summer spell. Smaller lawns also change the game: more of your shots are short to medium length, roquets and approaches where a steady, accurate stroke counts for more than raw distance.

Which Invictus mallet suits Exeter players

Invictus Rise, £525. The one most players buy. A 3 lb (approximately) aluminium head keeps the ball moving on damp grass, and the slightly enlarged sweet spot gives a bit more margin on short, delicate shots. We tend to recommend an 11 inch head with this model.

RF Pro, £975. Our flagship, designed with World Champion Robert Fletcher. Weighing about 2 lb 12 oz, it combines a 3D printed aluminium body with brass weights and composite faces; lighter and very precise, it rewards players who want the finest control on a small lawn.

You choose the handle length and an 11 or 12 inch head, and we make the mallet to order. It comes in Graphite Black, or in Rose Gold, NRA Blue, Deep Purple or Snow White for £89 more. Weight is not selectable. Our fitting page and side-by-side comparison will help.

Balls for Exeter clubs

With World Croquet Federation championship approval, a 450 g weight and manufacture entirely in Australia, Invictus X balls cost £479 per set. A two-lawn club would, as a guide, want a set of first colours and a set of second colours for each lawn. See how to choose croquet balls for a club.

Delivery to Exeter

Each mallet is made to order and sent to the UK, normally arriving 4 to 8 weeks after you order; that is an estimate only. For balls, you will know the full delivered price before you pay.

Questions Exeter players ask

Do short lawns call for a lighter mallet? Not always. Many players keep the Rise for its forgiveness; those who value pure precision often prefer the RF Pro.

Can I return it if it is wrong for me? With the optional 30-day satisfaction guarantee, £75, you can use it in club games and then decide.

Is a 12 inch head better? It is personal. The longer head suits some strikers; the fitting guide explains how to choose.
