Croquet mallets and balls in Cumbria and the Lake District

The short answer: players from Kendal and Ulverston to Keswick and Penrith can order an Invictus mallet or Invictus X balls online with delivery anywhere in Cumbria. In England's wettest corner, where lawns stay soft most of the year, our first pick is the Invictus Rise.

Croquet in Cumbria and the Lake District

Five clubs keep croquet going around the Lakes. Westmorland Croquet Club plays in the privately owned grounds of Levens Hall, near Kendal, on two full-sized lawns and a half lawn; its 2026 season ran from 27 March to 22 October, seven days a week, and it calls itself the nearest club for South Cumbria and North Lancashire. Crake Valley Croquet Club, at Greenodd in the south Lakes, has three full lawns and a new clubhouse, and stages advanced association croquet events including the Cumbria Cup and the Cavendish Clock. Westmorland and Crake Valley meet Keswick, which plays at the Braithwaite Institute, and Penrith and North Lakes, at the Edenhall and Langwathby sports ground, for the Cumbria Tankard. Patterdale Tennis and Croquet Club has a lawn on the King George V playing field near Ullswater. All five belong to the North West Federation.

What Cumbria's lawns and weather mean for your mallet

The Lake District takes the brunt of Atlantic weather, and its fells make it the rainiest part of England. Valley grass is green and seldom firm, and a summer season that runs from late March into October spends much of its time on slow grass. That favours a mallet with real weight in the head, so the ball travels without a forced swing.

Which Invictus mallet suits Cumbrian players

Invictus Rise, £525. Of all our mallets, the one ordered most. The head is aluminium, about 3 lb, and its sweet spot is fractionally enlarged, which makes control a little easier. Our recommendation with it is the 11 inch head.

RF Pro, £975. The flagship, worked out in collaboration with World Champion Robert Fletcher. It is lighter, close to 2 lb 12 oz, and very precise: an aluminium head produced by 3D printing, with brass weights inside and composite on both faces.

We build to order: tell us your handle length and pick an 11 inch or a 12 inch head. Graphite Black comes as standard, and Deep Purple, Snow White, NRA Blue or Rose Gold add £89. You cannot set the weight. See our fitting guide and mallet comparison.

Balls for Cumbrian clubs

A set of Invictus X costs £479. Each ball is 450 g; all are made entirely in Australia, and the World Croquet Federation has cleared them for championship use. The guide is one first-colour and one second-colour set per full lawn, so three of each for Crake Valley. See choosing club balls.

Delivery to Cumbria

After you order, the mallet is made and dispatched to the UK; allow 4 to 8 weeks, usually, before it reaches Cumbria, an estimate only. Ball sets are offered at a delivered price confirmed before you pay.

Questions Cumbrian players ask

I mostly play handicap golf croquet. Rise or RF Pro? The Rise; its weight helps on slow Lakeland grass.

Can I play the season's first weeks with it before deciding? You can: £75 buys our optional satisfaction guarantee, good for 30 days.

Will Lakeland rain damage the head? No. Dry the faces after a wet game; see product care.
