Croquet mallets and balls in Colac

The short answer: Colac players can order an Invictus mallet or Invictus X balls online, delivered to the Colac Otway district. Because the lawns here are slow for much of the season, the Invictus Rise, with its 3 lb head, is the mallet we would put in most hands first.

Croquet in Colac

Colac's croquet is run by the Colac Mallet Sports Club from 48A Church Street, on natural-grass lawns with a clubhouse, accessible facilities and off-street parking. Golf croquet starts at 9.30am on Thursday and Saturday mornings, and from about 11.30am the same lawns switch to association, golf or ricochet; Tuesday afternoons are mostly golf croquet. The formal season runs from September to May, but members play on through winter whenever weather and lawns allow. Beginners and visitors can borrow equipment, no experience is needed, and the club's free Seniors Festival come-and-try session finishes with morning tea. It also invites travelling players to "Play and Stay": spend a few days in Colac, join the club days and see the Great Ocean Road between games.

What Colac's lawns and weather mean for your mallet

Colac sits beside its lake on the volcanic plains, with the Otway Ranges to the south. The climate is cool and fairly damp: mild summers, cold winters and plenty of grey days in between. Even in midsummer the grass seldom turns rock-hard, and from autumn it softens and slows. A head with some heft, swung evenly, does most of the work on courts like these.

Which Invictus mallet suits Colac players

Invictus Rise, A$990. Our most popular mallet. Its aluminium head weighs about 3 lb, which pushes the ball through soft turf, and a slightly larger sweet spot makes it a little easier to control. The 11 inch head is our standard recommendation.

RF Pro, A$1,980. Our flagship, a collaboration with World Champion Robert Fletcher. The 3D printed aluminium head is fitted with brass weights and composite faces, and the mallet is about 2 lb 12 oz. Lighter and very precise, it is the one for association players who want the finest control.

Each mallet is made to order to your handle length, with an 11 or 12 inch head. Graphite Black is supplied as standard; NRA Blue, Deep Purple, Snow White or Rose Gold cost an extra A$130.90. The fitting guide and compare mallets page set out the options.

Balls for Colac clubs

Invictus X is approved by the World Croquet Federation for championship play, weighs 450 g and is made entirely in Australia. A set costs A$990. Allow a set of first colours and a set of second colours for each lawn; croquet ball colours explained shows what each set holds.

Questions Colac players ask

I play golf, association and ricochet. Is one mallet enough? Yes. Both Invictus models handle all three.

Can I play a month with it first? Yes, with the free 30-day satisfaction guarantee.

Do winter games hurt the head? No. Aluminium does not mind the damp; wipe it dry and see product care.
