Croquet mallets and balls in Brisbane

The short answer: Brisbane players can order a made-to-measure Invictus mallet, and Brisbane clubs a set of Invictus X balls, online, with delivery to any club from Woody Point to Eagleby. For most players on the city's summer lawns we would suggest the Invictus Rise.

Croquet in Brisbane

Brisbane's first croquet ground was laid out in the Botanic Gardens in 1865. Graceville's club formed in 1919, and its timber clubhouse on Appel Street still looks over three lawns. McIlwraith, at Auchenflower, began in 1923 on land given by Lady Harriette McIlwraith, has recovered from more than one flood and celebrated its centenary in 2023.

Croquet Queensland now lists 13 clubs across greater Brisbane, from Eildon, Pine Rivers, Toombul and Windsor in the north to Stephens, Wynnum, East Brisbane and Twin Rivers in the south. Stephens plays on four full-size grass courts at Yeronga Park, and most clubs run a weekly come-and-try with mallets to borrow.

What Brisbane's lawns and weather mean for your mallet

Brisbane is subtropical. Through summer the city sweats under humid days and late-afternoon thunderstorms, the grass shoots up, and a lawn can play heavy the morning after a downpour. Dry, sunny winters firm the same lawn up and quicken it. You want weight for damp grass and control for the quick months.

Which Invictus mallet suits Brisbane players

Invictus Rise, A$990. More of our players pick this model than any other. Its aluminium head weighs about 3 lb, which keeps the ball travelling through wet-season grass, and its slightly larger sweet spot makes it a little easier to control. We generally pair it with an 11 inch head.

RF Pro, A$1,980. The flagship, created together with World Champion Robert Fletcher: a 3D printed aluminium head carrying brass weights and composite faces, near 2 lb 12 oz overall. It suits players wanting a lighter, very precise mallet on firm winter lawns.

We cut each one to the handle length you send us and fit an 11 or 12 inch head. Graphite Black is standard; Snow White, NRA Blue, Rose Gold or Deep Purple cost A$130.90 more. Head weight is fixed for each model. Measure yourself with the mallet fitting guide, then read compare mallets.

Balls for Brisbane clubs

Invictus X balls have World Croquet Federation championship approval, weigh 450 g, are made entirely in Australia and cost A$990 a set. A sensible start is one set of first colours and one of second colours per lawn. Ball colours explained untangles the sequence.

Delivery to Brisbane

Nothing is built until you order, so a mallet usually reaches Brisbane 4 to 8 weeks later: our estimate, not a guarantee. Ball sets come by courier, and you see the delivered cost before paying.

Questions Brisbane players ask

Can I see one before buying? There is no Brisbane showroom. Add the optional 30-day satisfaction guarantee (A$99) and use the mallet in ordinary club games before deciding.

Will storm-season damp hurt an aluminium head? No. Aluminium does not swell or split as timber can. Dry it after a wet game; product care explains more.

Is Invictus a Brisbane business? We are in Queensland, on the Sunshine Coast, so Brisbane is close to home.
