Croquet mallets and balls in the Blue Mountains
The short answer: Blue Mountains players can order an Invictus mallet or Invictus X balls online and have them made to order and delivered. On cool mountain lawns, the Invictus Rise is where most players should begin.
Croquet in the Blue Mountains
The Blue Mountains Croquet Club started in Leura on 17 September 1980 and has moved often since, from Leura to Katoomba and then to the old Blackheath Bowling Club. In 2015 it agreed to share Peter Carroll Field in Clarence Street, Leura, with the cricket association, with two lawns inside the oval and a third, funded by garage sales and raffles, outside the boundary for cricket Saturdays. It plays golf croquet on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday mornings, and the first few coaching sessions are free with club equipment. When it turned forty in 2020 it had forty members. Hazelbrook, lower down the range, has its own club, and over the top at Lithgow the club's newly extended green on the corner of James and Young Streets takes croquet and gateball at once, with club mallets free for visitors.
What the mountains' lawns and weather mean for your mallet
The upper mountains run far cooler than Sydney. Mist rolls in off the valleys, winters bring hard frosts and an occasional fall of snow, and lawns can stay wet and slow long after the session starts. Summers are mild, and a dry spell will firm the courts. Expect to need some head weight for much of the year.
Which Invictus mallet suits Blue Mountains players
Invictus Rise, A$990. Chosen more often than any other Invictus mallet. Its 3 lb or so of aluminium head keeps a ball moving on a misty, holding lawn, and a slightly larger sweet spot makes it a little easier to control. The 11 inch head is our normal recommendation.
RF Pro, A$1,980. The flagship model, developed with the help of World Champion Robert Fletcher. Aluminium head, 3D printed, carrying brass weights and composite faces; at about 2 lb 12 oz it is lighter and very precise.
We make each to the buyer's handle length, with a choice of 11 or 12 inch head. Graphite Black is included in the price. Snow White, NRA Blue, Rose Gold and Deep Purple are A$130.90 more. Our fitting guide walks you through measuring, and compare mallets lays out the choice.
Balls for Blue Mountains clubs
Invictus X balls are 450 g, made entirely in Australia and championship approved by the World Croquet Federation, priced at A$990 a set. For a three-lawn club like Leura, think three sets of first colours and three of second. Read how many ball sets a club needs.
Delivery to the Blue Mountains
Built after you order, a mallet usually arrives in the mountains about 4 to 8 weeks later. That timing is an estimate, never a guarantee.
Questions Blue Mountains players ask
I have only played golf croquet with club mallets. Which first? The Rise, made to your handle length.
Snow and frost: any risk to the head? None; it is aluminium. Dry the faces afterwards and see product care.
